Is “movie night” fast becoming a thing of the past in your household? Is the cost of driving to the theater, buying tickets and refreshments, and maybe paying a babysitter, too much of a splurge for your budget?
If that’s the case, you’re not alone. TIME.com reports that people’s interest in going to the movies is fading (although not necessarily because of the economy; it’s more about the ticket cost itself), and that 61% of adults in a recent poll said they rarely or never go out to the movies.
But that doesn’t mean they aren’t watching movies!
They may well be saving their pennies by choosing one of several less expensive, stay-at-home movie options, such as one of the following fan favorites:
This annual membership program offers not only free two-day shipping on qualified purchases, it includes unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies at no additional cost. The price of a one-year subscription could actually be less than what you’d pay for just one family night at the local movie theater!
Netflix’s subscription service offers unlimited streamed movies for a low monthly price (with a free monthly trail now available). You can watch the movies as many times as you want, as often as you want. Netflix also offers DVD rentals by mail.
For a low daily rate starting at $1 a day, you can rent a movie at a Redbox kiosk with 200 titles available, and return it to any Redbox location when you’re done. You can even reserve movies right from your phone using the Redbox mobile app. (Avoid extra charges by returning your movie on time!)
Watch movies at home via video on demand, with no late fees and nothing to return. Most cable providers offer a wide variety of movies for instant pay-per-view viewing at a fraction of what it would cost for one ticket at the theater.
Be Patient — The one down side of movie rentals is the timing. Box office favorites may not be available for weeks, months, or even longer following their original release. But if you’re a patient person, the money you save on movies in the long run will make it well worth the wait.
