If you are considering applying for a credit card, loan or mortgage, you probably know it’s a good idea to find out your credit score. But did you know it’s also a good idea to check your credit on an annual basis “just in case?”
That’s because your credit report can affect more than whether or not you can get a loan, or what your borrowing rate would be. It can impact your chances of getting a job or insurance. Unusual activity can also reveal if you are a victim of identity theft.
The three major credit reporting agencies TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax, have made reviewing your report easy, and free, through the web site AnnualCreditReport.com.
To order your credit report, visit AnnualCreditReport.com and enter your information. It is recommended that you order your free report from all three agencies as each may have different information. All reports can be ordered at the same time through this site, or you can order them individually at different times.
You can also call 1-877-322-8228, or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
Once you receive your reports, make sure you review them carefully. Any errors should be corrected immediately, following stops as outlined by the FTC.
Checking your credit on an ongoing basis is an easy and inexpensive way to protect your identity and your financial health.
