This week’s Friday Focus organization, Breakfast at Sniffany’s helps to raise awareness and funds for various animal rescue groups throughout Southern Maryland. Started as a fundraising event, Breakfast at Sniffany’s has grown into a full-fledged nonprofit organization. We caught up with Heather Maertens, the organization’s founder, who gave us the inside scoop on the annual Breakfast at Sniffany’s brunch coming up this weekend in Solomon’s!
Q: Tell us about your organization (who you serve, what you do, etc.)
A: Breakfast at Sniffany’s began as an annual event hosted by Maertens Fine Jewelry & Gifts. As the event grew from year to year, not only did we realize that we needed a larger venue, but that we could transform this fundraiser into an actual nonprofit organization. Breakfast at Sniffany’s is now a Maryland nonprofit corporation and is in the process of becoming a full-fledged 501(c)(3) charity. Our mission is to host fun and fancy events to raise funds and awareness to benefit local animal rescue groups.
Q: What is your favorite “moment” (example of how your organization helped)?
A: Every time our Breakfast at Sniffany’s brunch rolls around, our favorite part is connecting with fellow dog lovers. Whether it’s sharing an adoption story or connecting much needed volunteers with our local shelters, we love seeing new participants come out of the woodwork year after year. The most rewarding part of what we do is raising awareness in our area. Southern Maryland is lucky enough to have so many great resources and the people and animals in these rescue organizations deserve our help and recognition.
Q: What is your biggest challenge?
A: We are always looking to expand our reach. As mentioned above, we love meeting fellow dog lovers and are always looking for new businesses and individuals to partner with for our fundraisers.
Q: Are there any upcoming events?
A: Our 4th Annual Breakfast at Sniffany’s Brunch and Benefit Auction is coming up on Sunday, May 17th from 10 am until 1 pm. This year’s event will take place at the Holiday Inn Select Solomon’s and will feature a full breakfast buffet, doggy treat and sundae bar, mimosa bar, silent auction and cake cutting. We also have contests for largest and smallest dogs, best trick, and best dressed. Every penny raised from this event will be split between The Humane Society of Calvert County, Calvert Animal Welfare League, Patuxent Animal Welfare Society, and Sugar Faces Senior Dog Rescue. These four rescue groups will all be in attendance with information about their organizations and adoptable dogs. Tickets are $35 per person and four-legged guests are always free.
Q: How can people get involved with your organization?
A: We can be reached Monday through Saturday at Maertens Fine Jewelry & Gifts in the Lusby Commons Shopping Center. Give us a call anytime at (410) 394-3990. We are also very active on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
