Q: Tell us about your organization (who you serve, what you do, etc.)
The Arc Southern Maryland is a non-profit organization affiliated at the state level with The Arc of Maryland and at the national level with The Arc of the United States, which is the world’s largest grass roots organization of, and for, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including Down syndrome, autism, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, cerebral palsy and other diagnoses. Since 1975, The Arc Southern Maryland has provided quality support and programs aimed at creating opportunities for independence and personal success for people with different abilities in inclusive communities.
Q: What is your favorite “moment” (example of how your organization helped)?
Recently, a man with intellectual disabilities was left alone in his home while his mother had been taken to the hospital. Luckily, a neighbor noticed that the gentleman’s mother was away and that he’d been left alone. This neighbor reached out and The Arc Southern Maryland was able to get involved. While we tried to maintain his living situation in his family home, it wasn’t the ideal situation for him. So, we were able to successfully transition him into one of our residential locations and he is doing very well! We are happy that this gentleman’s neighbor was so gracious to be concerned and that The Arc came to mind. We are proud to have helped during this critical transition in this man’s life. This situation brings forth the importance of community. Our communities have been incredibly important to the success of our agency and those that we support.
Q: What is your biggest challenge?
The Arc Southern Maryland faces a number of challenges as a non-profit organization in regards to limited funding and meeting the needs of those we support. We have some great community partners that help to support and sponsor us in ways that allow us to continue to provide quality services. We also depend on dedicated people within the community that are willing to become volunteers to help us keep doing what we do every day for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Q: Are there any upcoming events?
In December, The Arc Southern Maryland will be celebrating our past year with our annual awards & dance celebration for all staff and people we support. Our next big event that we look forward to is our Annual Golf Tournament, which serves as a fundraiser and will be held on May 25th. Other events can be found on our website or on Facebook.
Q: How can people get involved with your organization?
We are currently looking for motivated, energetic individuals ready to support people with different abilities in enjoying their lives and reaching their personal goals. We have careers available throughout Southern Maryland for people with all levels of experience.
