Q: Tell us about your organization (who you serve, what you do, etc.)
We conduct fundraisers like book sales from donated books, mini-golf and Pub Quiz in order to provide financial support for Calvert Library. If you think of the library as coffee, the Friends provide the cream for the coffee. Most people recognize that coffee (and a library) is an important energizing thing even if you don’t drink it yourself, but boy does cream make it something special! We fund materials and supplies for classes and workshops, extras like digital cameras, snacks for receptions, volunteer appreciation and even training for librarians.
Q: What is your favorite “moment” (example of how your organization helped)?
My favorite moment happened years ago when I first came to Friends. We were asked to buy flannel boards for storytime at each library branch and we were able to do this. These boards are still being used today. Considering what the Friends do now, it was a very small amount, but for me it was the beginning of all the great things we can accomplish now.
Q: What is your biggest challenge?
Friends raise money to do so many things for the library that are not included in the budget and we are happy to do this. Our challenge comes when we recognize the many wonderful initiatives the library could take to better serve our customers if only the Friends’ financial reach were a little wider and deeper!
Q: Are there any upcoming events?
Yes, we have our big Annual Book Sale which kicks off with a Members Only Preview Sale on Jan. 12 at 5-7 pm and open to the public Friday, Jan. 13, noon to 3 pm, and Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm.
Q: How can people get involved with your organization?
Stop by any Calvert Library location and ask for a Friends Membership application or visit our website for the form you can mail in with your check.
