10 quick tips : Protect yourself when you’re away from home

Have last-minute summer travel plans?

Here are 10 quick tips to protect your finances while you’re gone:

  1. Alert your bank and credit card companies that you’ll be traveling – especially if you’re going overseas – so they can keep a close fraud watch on your accounts.
  2. Hold the mail! Ask a neighbor to collect it, or have the post office temporarily stop delivery. Same goes for the newspaper you might have delivered to your doorstep.
  3. Mow the lawn! Weed the front garden! Again, ask a friend or neighbor to keep your home looking “occupied” in your absence.
  4. Don’t post definitive travel plans or photos you take during your travels on Facebook or Twitter. Wait until you return.
  5. Make copies of all important documents you’ll be carrying. Leave the information with someone you’ll be able to get in touch with in case of an emergency.
  6. Weed out your wallet. Don’t carry your Social Security number or other personally identifying information, and only take your ATM/debit debit card and one major credit card.
  7. Handle your plastic wisely. Use a credit card for larger purchases, and a debit card to get cash.
  8. Be wary of strange ATMs. Lessen the risk of trouble by using machines at bank branches rather than free-standing machines at restaurants, convenience stores, and tourist spots. Remember, with a Community Bank ATM card, you enjoy surcharge-free access to more than 43,000 ATMs worldwide with the Allpoint® network.
  9. Check your bank accounts regularly for suspicious activity. Online  banking is a perfect way  to keep watch over your account from wherever you are. Sign up  https://www.cbtc.com/login/enroll.aspx well before your trip.
  10. Don’t let your guard down once you’re home. Identity thieves are as devious as they are dangerous, and they can strike when you least expect it. If you suspect something is amiss, immediately order a copy of your credit report from the three major reporting agencies online, or by calling 1-877-322-8228
