Easy Ways to Protect Your Mobile Device

They’re here, there and everywhere. They’re mobile devices, and they literally bring a worldwide web of opportunity – right to our fingertips.

But what many of us often fail to realize is that while mobile devices make our lives more convenient; they also make theft more convenient for those looking to steal your identity.

So how concerned about mobile device security should you be?

The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), an organization dedicated to Internet safety, encourages mobile users to use the same security precautions as they would on their personal computers. Further, according to an article on pcworld.com, the security risks will only increase as mobile devices become more sophisticated.

Fortunately, there are some steps you can take. The NCSA website, staysafeonline.com, offers these helpful suggestions:

  • Keep your device clean. When it becomes available, be sure to update your system software. Not only will this keep your device up-to-date, but it will help protect your devices from viruses and malware.
  • Guard your personal information. Mobile devices can get lost or stolen. You can protect your personal information from getting in the wrong hands by using a passcode.  Also, be sure to review the privacy policy of any applications you download.  Lastly, give your mobile number only to those you know and trust.
  • Connect carefully.  Pay attention to where you connect. If you’re on an unprotected network, be vigilant about what sites you visit and what information you enter.
  • Be “webwise” and informed.  Stay informed of updates on your device, as well as the latest on security information and alerts.
