Summer Savings Tip: Back to School Deals

You’ve spent the whole summer saving money with our Summer Savings Tips – and even as the summer winds down, our tips continue!

Back to school preparation is always costly, but we want you to hang on to that money you’ve worked so hard to save this summer.

Here’s how:

Savvy shopping
Brick and mortar retail shops are delivering steep discounts in an attempt to sway people from their online competitors. Just a few stores with outrageous deals include The Children’s Place, JCPenney and Old Navy. Don’t ignore flyers in the newspaper this weekend – they can be a great place to find the latest and great deals, including coupons for school supplies and clothing.

Plus, if you get your shopping done soon, you can save even more by taking advantage of Maryland’s Tax Free Holiday, which ends August 18th.

Shop online and save
Online shopping isn’t just convenient, it can be a great way to save on back to school shopping:

  • Look for opportunities to save by waiting until your favorite site offers free shipping.
  • Sign up to receive e-mail newsletters from your favorite retailers – most will happily send you coupons and special offers on a regular basis.
  • Don’t complete your virtual checkout out before checking out these online shopping coupons.
  • Compare prices. In only a few clicks and with very little time, you can learn which stores are showing the best savings on the specific brands and products you prefer.

Buy less, more often
It’s usually pretty easy with young children, but, let’s face it – with pre-teens and teens, back to school shopping can be a nightmare. Despite your own grown-up belief that school is not a fashion show or accessory competition, most kids care – an awful lot about what they wear.

To help keep them in fashion without breaking the bank, consider buying them one or two weeks worth of the styles they crave – not a season’s worth. Kids can take advantage of today’s eclectic styles and layer their summer clothes in with their new fall fashions.

With styles changing faster than even the retailers can keep up with – by next month they’ll be begging you for new clothes anyway.

Exchange gently used clothing
At this time of year “it’s in with the new and out with the old” – but what to do with your child’s used clothing? Consider giving your gently used clothing, and accepting the same, from friends and family, as a way to save on clothing purchases.

Don’t know anyone looking for kids clothing? The service thredUP takes hand me downs into the Internet age! Send them your child’s gently used clothing and you can earn cash, or credit towards purchases on other handed down items.

Create a teachable moment
While you are shopping for back to school, take the opportunity to talk to your children about money and spending. Consider giving your child a small budget for clothing purchases, and help them figure out what they can (and can’t) afford to buy. And discuss with them ways they can save more, or shop locally.
